- Extract from 'The Heroick Friendship: a tragedy by the late Mr Otway' (1719) Act 1 Scene 1. 'An attempt was made in 1719, to pass off a contemptible tragedy, called "Heroic Friendship," as the long-sought production of Otway. The MS. was not in his hand-writing; but the internal evidence of the play was, alone, sufficient to induce the public to reject it as an impudent imposture'. Thornton (1813) I: xlix.
