The latter poem is attributed to James Smith in ODNB and Roy Booth, 'Hero's afterlife: Hero and Leander and "lewd unmannerly verse" in the late seventeenth century', Early Modern Literary Studies, 12.3 (2007), article 4. This 'Prologue' to the poem refers to 'Friend J. S.'.
